Valparaíso (pop. 300,000), a city of seafaring traditions and grand hilltop views that served as inspiration to Chile’s native son, poet Pablo Neruda, lies halfway down Chile’s seemingly endless coastline. This beautiful port town is located just sixty-eight miles north of the capital city of Santiago. Founded originally by the Changos Indians, “Valpo” was discovered by the Spaniard Juan de Savedra in 1536. The port was transformed into a strategic point for navigation for all boats that came from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, causing a boom in the area that had never been seen. New industries, businesses, transport systems, and communications were started. Important immigrants from England, together with the unusual topography of this urban port, gave the city a unique personality. Valparaíso’s most interesting and distinctive features are the acensores, or funiculars, which provide tourists and residents access to its picturesque hillside neighborhoods.
