Overview
This intensive two-year program is designed for students who wish to study contemporary biblical (Hebrew scriptures) studies, providing grounding in Biblical (as well as Modern) Hebrew, and enabling students to specialize in one of two tracks:
The Bible: Cultural and Historical Context. In this specialization, the student will study the historical, cultural, and geographical context in which the Bible was composed, as well as the influence and "reception" of the Bible in later cultural and historical contexts.
The Bible and the Ancient Near East. In this specialization, as well as studying the Bible in its immediate regional context, the student will be expected to acquire a sound basic knowledge of the history and culture of the Ancient Near East, including the study of Akkadian. (Students who so choose will also be able to study other ancient languages, such us Egyptian, Ugaritic, or Greek.)
This program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Bible, the Institute of Archaeology, and the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
