Overview
Built on a crescent-shaped ridge, Darjeeling is surrounded by hills that are thickly covered with coniferous forests and terraced tea gardens. The idyllic landscape, the exhilarating air and the stunning views of the Kanchanjunga range will be the setting for Passage's eight-week Darjeeling program. This program is designed to introduce you to a distinct cultural environment that combines elements of Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha and Indian societies.
Students fly into Calcutta (Kolkata) in West Bengal, the intellectual center of India with an outstanding contribution to the arts, sciences, medicine, and a rich contemporary cultural life. From Calcutta the group will take a train, then a car journey to Darjeeling. Students will live with Nepali families in Darjeeling while taking intensive Nepali language training and attending lectures on the history, religions, ecology and environment of this area. This is the time when those who so wish may choose to do an internship.
A range of internships in the arts, crafts, traditional medicine, religion, the tea industry, and volunteer positions will be available. There will be a trip to a wildlife sanctuary in the Bengal plains, one of the last refuges for the Indian rhino, whose numbers are seriously threatened by poachers. A village stay outside Kalimpong set in beautiful wooded mountain scenery will be followed by a trek in Sikkim, the Himalayan state that offers some of the finest trekking country in the Himalayas. Two days of rafting from Sikkim down the Teesta River will bring you back to Kalimpong for the de-orientation period. The group will then drive back to Calcutta for a day before flying on to their respective destinations.
