Overview
On this 17-day intensive field course we will focus on the ecology, evolution and conservation of the Galápagos Islands. Students can experience the beauty and fragility of tropical ecosystems directly by their sense of vision, touch, and smell. Galápagos is a world-class destination for a safe experience of pristine ecosystems. Credit in biology.
Look forward to watching sea turtles and penguins, observing sea birds nesting two steps away from you, snorkeling with playful sea lions and tracing back the steps of Charles Darwin and other intrepid biologists. Would you enjoy a face-to-face encounter with ancient giant tortoises in their natural habitat? How about listening to a naturalist’s talk on the sundeck of the yacht while cruising under a towering volcanic peak?
Then we will get active. Look forward to a week of serious work and serious fun in the quaint resort town of Puerto Ayora and its beautiful beach. Some parts of Galápagos National Park are threatened by non-native plant species. We will help in an international conservation effort by the NGO Earthwatch to rid a unique Galápagos forest from choking weeds. With scientists from the renowned Charles Darwin Research Station we will research the best way to control those unwanted intruders. In the end, you have done it all: frolicked in the ocean, watched sunsets on the beach, observed wildlife from real close, worked like a scientist and helped to preserve the beauty of Galápagos for good. This course is open to any major, credit is for BIOL 379 or 592.
