Overview
Join us this summer in the Atlantic Rainforest, working on biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods. You’ll be looking at the extraordinary and irreplaceable biodiversity of one of Brazil's richest rainforests, and trying to help poor farmers make better use of their croplands and gain a better understanding of the value of their forest heritage.

At Iracambi you’ll be on the cutting edge of the development versus conservation dilemma, helping to figure out ways that both forests and people can flourish. You'll start by learning why, for the past 500 years, the Atlantic Forest has been retreating in the face of predatory human settlement. This will give you a thorough orientation into the challenges and opportunities facing conservationists in areas where smallholders are caught in a vicious circle of poverty. Once you understand the issues, you'll get to work. You may be monitoring forest growth, taking soil and water samples, raising seedlings in our forest nursery, learning about forest medicinal plants, repairing and maintaining forest trails or selecting priority areas for creating forest corridors. You may be recording populations, doing inventory work, or working with a GPS on forest fragments.

Whatever you are doing, you’ll be helping to make a difference: restoring the health of forests and forest communities. You'll be living in an international group of Brazilian and foreign students from several different countries, and you'll be interacting with the local community on environmental education and outreach, sharing your knowledge and experience and learning from them. During the three week program you'll have plenty of opportunity to hike in the forests, climb mountains, swim in the rock pools, go horseback riding or play soccer with the locals. (Don't expect to win!) There will be a mid session excursion to the nearby historic town of Ouro Preto, and your last two days will be spent getting to know Rio de Janeiro – the Cidade Maravilhosa (the Marvelous City.) You’ll work hard, have a lot of fun, and leave with unforgettable memories.
