Overview
KEI's Chinese Language, Culture, and Humanities Program emphasizes intensive Mandarin language training. The program is hosted by the University of International Business and Economics in central Beijing, which has one of China's oldest language programs. Language courses utilize an immersion strategy, with little or no English spoken during class. Students take courses in Chinese speaking, comprehension, grammar, and writing, as well as an Asian Studies seminar (required). Students can take one other course of their choosing, from those offered (in English or Mandarin). The academic curriculum is complemented by professional visits, an internship, and extensive excursions (semester programs include a week-long excursion and a 3-day trip to Shanghai or Xi'an).
UIBE is designated a Key University in China, at the forefront of educational, economic, and political reform. Founded in 1951, it enrolls 20,000 Chinese and international students.
