Overview
The Consortium for Andean Studies will hold its second annual Andean Study Abroad Research Program from May 16 to June 24, 2005. The program is a multidisciplinary, research-intensive course at the graduate-level -- ideal for students planning to write theses or dissertations and conduct fieldwork related to Andean topics. The uniqueness of the program lies in the many opportunities students have to interact and establish relationships with local scholars, policy-makers and community leaders, and to have full access to the Biblioteca Inca, the largest private research library on the Andean region.
Students stay in Cochabamba for six weeks at Fundación Inca, a historic hacienda that includes the Biblioteca Inca, classrooms, auditorium, dormitories, a health clinic, and dining and recreational facilities. Biblioteca Inca holds over 140,000 volumes and 5,000 periodicals on the Andes (Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela). In addition, students are offered classes in basic Quechua.
The program includes a weekend excursion into the Chapare lowland jungle region and trips to La Paz and Potosí in the highland altiplano. Students can take advantage of Cochabamba’s vibrant nightlife and numerous historical sites as well as use the city’s convenient location to schedule treks to surrounding Incan ruins.
The Andean Study Abroad Research Program counts for three (3) graduate credits. Proficiency in Spanish is highly recommended. Graduate students, advanced undergraduates and independent researchers are eligible to apply. The program is made possible through the generous support of Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, Fundación Inca and the Universidad Privada Boliviana. For more information about the program, please contact the Program Coordinator at (305) 348-2894.
