Overview
The Florida Consortium for Latin American Studies will hold its eighth annual Haitian Summer Institute from June 29 to August 17, 2005. The Institute is designed for anyone interested in acquiring a basic conversational proficiency in Haitian Creole and an understanding of Haitian culture. The first four and a half weeks of instruction are in Miami, followed by an optional two weeks of study abroad in Haiti.
The Institute takes advantage of FIU’s location in Miami, home to a vibrant Haitian community. The Miami portion of the course is held from June 29 to July 29 at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC). Housing is available at BBC or students may arrange off-campus housing.
The four-week program in Miami is divided into two parts: (Basic) Accelerated Haitian Creole is taught for the first two weeks with Intermediate Accelerated Haitian Creole immediately following. Each two-week course counts for three (3) undergraduate credits and stresses conversational language skills.
In addition to the coursework at FIU, an optional 3-credit study abroad component of the program takes students to Haiti from August 3-17. Students visit important historical and cultural sites throughout Haiti and have the opportunity to meet with individuals representing many sectors of Haitian society, including political figures, artists and community leaders.
The Haitian Summer Institute is open to degree-seeking, non-degree-seeking, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals. Credit may also be counted toward K-12 teacher re-certification. The Haitian Summer Institute is co-sponsored by Florida International University, the University of Florida, Miami-Dade Public Schools and the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program. For more information about the Haitian Summer Institute, please contact the Program Coordinator at (305) 348-2894.
