Overview
Undergraduate and graduate students may enrich their studies through participation in the Capital Normal University Exchange Program. Each semester students must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours. Most exchange participants enroll in intensive Chinese language courses. Placement exams which test listening comprehension, grammar/writing and reading comprehension are given upon arrival in Beijing. Results are used to determine the appropriate language level placement for participants.
CNU offers Chinese language courses from Level 1 through Level 8. Levels 1-2 are beginning to low-intermediate levels; Levels 3-4 are intermediate to advanced and Levels 5-6 are high-advanced. The intensive Chinese academic program is devoted entirely to language development and acquisition through courses such as Intensive Reading, Listening Comprehension, Speaking, Chinese TV, and Correcting Pronunciation. Newspaper Reading and Audio/Visual/Writing are offered at the intermediate levels at CNU. Students receive four hours a day, twenty hours a week of formal instruction.
Students proficient in Chinese language are able to attend any courses offered at Capital Normal University with native Chinese students.
In addition to the academic program, the Chinese Language training center at CNU provides substantial cultural and recreational activities. Non-credit cultural courses are taught on subjects including Taichi, Chinese Painting, Translation from English to Chinese, Chinese Dancing, and Playing Chinese Folk Musical Instruments, as well as a series of lectures on different aspects of Chinese Culture.
