Overview
The Cultural Anthropology in East Africa Program offers a unique summer field school opportunity in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, the forests of northern Tanzania, and the beautifully rugged terrain of northern Kenya. Over the course of one month of field study led by two WMU cultural anthropologists, students will engage in a one week Kiswahili--the lingua franca of East Africa--language intensive in Tanzania, a 5 day Hadza field course, and a 2 week Samburu field course in northern Kenya living alongside Samburu Herders. The Summer of 2004 will be an especially exciting time in Samburu because students will have the rare opportunity to view some of the many rituals and activities which will be undertaken in initiating a new generation of warriors--an event that occurs only once every 14 years.
The program exposes students to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Tanzania and Kenya set in the context of the splendor of the East African savannah, world renowned for the richness of its wildlife and biodiversity. The program will be ideally suited for students in anthropology, history, Africana studies, global studies, political science, public health, ecology and other fields.
