Overview
The International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy, offers intensive studio programs for developing painters and sculptors from around the world. Internationally distinguished artists teach and critique, and visiting artists and scholars lecture. Students work in classes and in their studios, and take weekly trips to study and draw from the great art of Italy. Students, residents and faculty live and work in the neighboring hill towns of Montecastello di Vibio and Todi, in Umbria, one of Italy's most beautiful regions.
The School is one of a very few of its kind in Europe or in the United States: a school of modern art with in-depth training in drawing, painting and sculpture. Enrollment is limited to about twenty-five students per session, with a 5:1 student/teacher ratio. This positive and intimate environment offers students many hours of formal and informal contact with faculty mentors.
Thanks to our powerful faculty, students come from all over the world. International School artists are of diverse ages and backgrounds: artists having completed or considering an MFA program, art professors, working artists, and undergraduate and graduate art students from important art schools around the world. The International School is an ideal environment in which developing artists can completely devote themselves to working and learning, building to a high level of productivity, and for many, a breakthrough.
Our living and working situation in North Central Italy is ideal for an artist; it offers breathtaking surroundings and marvelous light, quiet and privacy, wonderful food, and of course, Italy's rich cultural heritage. In this supportive yet rigorous studio environment, one can focus and work intensively, uninterrupted by the demands of daily life back home. Students work in the classroom and studio eight to twelve hours a day, six days a week, and make dramatic progress in their work. Those who stay for several consecutive sessions benefit tremendously. For many artists, the International School is more than a summer program -- it is their continuing professional education.

Apartment / Flat
Students and residents share modest apartments, all a short walk from the School buildings. Rooms are single and double-occupancy. The main school building, a former convent, has nine single rooms with views. Resident’s, Seminar and CE student’s rooms are single-occupancy. The School provides housecleaning services and clean sheets and towels weekly, and does not provide accommodations for spouses, pets or guests. Facilities in Montecastello are very basic and are not suitable for people with special needs.
Classrooms and studios are in several great stone palazzi in the village of Montecastello. Students and residents have 24-hour access to their private and semi-private studios. During non-working hours, students and residents use the School's art library, video collection, telephone, and computer with Internet access. Throughout the ancient town and out in the landscape are wonderful motifs and views to paint.
The program fee includes three delicious Umbrian meals each day, excluding trip days. Students, residents and faculty enjoy meals together, enabling students to have close contact with their art mentors. Meals are simple and wholesome, with fresh produce from nearby farms, and prepared with care by our local cooks. We take dinners on our dining terrace, overlooking the panorama of the Tiber River valley.
