Overview
A "gentle full-immersion" study abroad program offering courses taught in Italian for a semester or academic year. All participate in an Intensive Three-Week Language Course and then will take a variety of courses in Humanities and Social Sciences, Cultural Studies and will be strongly encouraged to participate in internships or in the Service Learning Sector concentrating on one of many possible areas. Throughout the semester, students will live with Italian host families and participate in various activities, unique workshops and off-the-beaten-path excursions that will have focus a major contact, integration and exchange with Italian culture, Italian language and, perhaps most importantly, Italian people!
For those students seeking a totally unique and infinitely rewarding experience abroad, Siena Italian Studies also offers a Service Learning Program that allows students to dedicate 15-20 hours a week to volunteer work in one of three main areas: Healthcare, Education or with marginalized groups in Florence. Students also take the Intensive Language Course, Italian language and an Anthropology/Sociology Course relevant to their volunteer work and to the current social situation in Italy.
Siena is located in the center of Tuscany. It is the birthplace of Italian language and is a meeting point of Medieval and Renaissance with a unique blend of art, history and culture. Home of the world famous Palio horse race held twice a summer, the incredible passion of the Sienese people can be seen, heard and felt all year round in the streets. Home of two major universities, Siena also has a vibrant student community, and hosts several major cultural events during the year. The city's central position makes cities like Florence (1 hour north), Rome (3 hours south) and Bologna (2 hours northeast) very accessible for day and weekend trips.
