Overview
Introduction to Field Ethnobiology(Bio 136L)
This course offers the exciting opportunity to study the medicinal, ceremonial, esthetic and subsistence use of plants and animals by humans in Central America. Topics covered include archeology, bioprospecting, linguistic diversity, and medicinal plants. Course design emphasizes intensive field work and visits all three OTS field stations, as well as other sites. Students are thus introduced to a variety of Central American ethnic groups in the context of diverse tropical habitats. As part of the course, students work closely with resident professors in the design, implementation, and interpretation of their own independent research project. Students thus learn ethnobiological techniques by doing ethnobiology in a beautiful, challenging, and culturally diverse tropical setting.
Intensive Study of Spanish (SP62) or
Advanced Intensive Spanish (102)
Intended for students who already possess a basic background in Spanish, this course begins intensively during the initial three weeks of the program. The chief goals are to expand vocabulary and conversational skills, strengthen grammar, and introduce key social, cultural, environmental and ethnobiological issues in Costa Rica. The curriculum consists of dynamic classroom discussions, supplemented by listening, writing and reading exercises. Students also analyze contemporary Spanish literature, indigenous legends, and additional articles pertinent to ethnobiology.
