Overview
The Universidad Catolica del Norte (UCN) is an educational institution belonging to the Catholic Church. It was founded in May 1956 and under the law 15.561 in 1964 it was recognized by the Government of Chile as an autonomous university, integrating the Council of Presidents of Chilean Universities as the eighth oldest university in Chile.
It is situated in the north of Chile, in the 2nd and 4th regions. These areas are mainly characterized by its dry weather and natural resources both mining and marine. It is also an area of clean and clear sky.
The 2nd region houses the headquarters located in Antofagasta which is known as Chile's mining Capital; the Institute of Astronomy and Astronomical Observatory “Cerro Armazones” placed in Sierra Vicuña Mackenna which has privileged natural conditions for the development of astronomy; and the Institute for Archaeological Research and Archaeological Museum R.F. Gustavo Le Paige S.J. located in the San Pedro de Atacama oasis, in the highlands. San Pedro the Atacama, 320km from Antofagasta with a population of 1,446 people, is one of the most prominent and culturally important places, regarded as Chile’s archaeological capital.
The Guayacán Campus is located in the city of Coquimbo, in the 4th region where the main economic activities are fishing, mining, agriculture and tourism. Placed on the northern coast of the bay known as La Herradura, the Guayacán Campus has a privileged position for the study of Marine Science.

To encourage the experience of total immersion in the richness of Chilean life and culture, we recommend international students to live with a Chilean family. Living with a Chilean family allows students to further enhance their Spanish language skills as they need to communicate with the host family members. All our Chilean families are carefully selected and provide the student with a private room.
