Overview
As the world's natural resources become depleted through mismanagement and unsustainable use, there is a growing demand for graduates with interdisciplinary skills that are broadly trained in both ecological and social issues involved in conservation and development. In order to meet this educational challenge, we have created a program in "Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development" aptly held in Panama, a country which suffers from one of the world's highest rates of tropical deforestation and financial inequality among its citizens. This program is intended to provide students with exposure to the multidisciplinary problems and solutions in the area of conservation and sustainable development and offers the opportunity to combine interdisciplinary course work with field experience and independent research.
The five week course is held at FSU-Panama located within the city of Knowledge, but takes students to a variety of national and private nature reserves as well as Linton Island Research Station situated in the Caribbean Sea.
Set in the heart of a global biodiversity hotspot, this course provides an excellent learning opportunity for undergraduate biologists who wish to obtain tropical field experience and witness first hand the conservation issues faced by developing countries. Sessions will be lead by experts in the fields of conservation biology and human development.
The course attracts 6 credits from Florida State University
