Overview
In this program, students will have the chance to live and study in the centers of two of the world's great religions--Hinduism and Buddhism--and to travel amid some of the most incredible landscapes in the world. To provide intimate exposure to our host cultures in India, Nepal and Tibet, students will participate in language training, home-stays, service work and village excursions.
Curriculum Highlights: Students will be offered language training designed to be practical and fun. Participants will also complete service projects, studies in anthropology as well as independent study projects matched to a theme or topic of the student's interest.
Setting Description: Our program is based in three locations: Varanasi: the holiest city in India; Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal and a cultural melting pot; and central Tibet, including its ancient capital of Lhasa.
Program Value: Throughout the program, students will not only study the history and beliefs of two of the world's most important religious traditions, but also begin to understand what it might mean to be a Hindu or Buddhist in the 21st century. We will emerge from this intensive exploration with a richer sense of how these traditions are not only woven into the lives of the individuals we meet in India, Nepal, and Tibet, but how they influence nearly every aspect of life in these societies. In short, our goal is to experience how culture and religion helps shape a person's sense of what is real, what happens, and what counts.
