Overview
Fulfill your community service requirement and earn three credit hours in International Studies or Geography. This alternative Spring Break trip is designed to create involvement and experience through community service. Volunteer near the beautiful southern Pacific coast of Ecuador. Participants have the opportunity to make a direct positive impact on the people of Ecuador.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
GEO 300: Geography of Ecuador / IS 305: International Studies: Ecuador. This course will provide a topical overview of the South American country of Ecuador. It will examine Ecuador's diverse population and culture (composed of persons of European, Native American and African descent), its progressive political system (democratic elections have determined the government since 1979), its dynamic economy (driven by the oil industry), and it s varied physical geography (that includes coastal plains, jungles, the Andes Mountains and volcanic islands).
Readings will be assigned prior to the trip. Numerous hands-on educational and community service experiences will be scheduled during the week in Ecuador. Students will be asked to keep a journal of their thoughts and experiences while in Ecuador and write a paper on a topic of their choice upon their return.
Eligibility
Participants must have a minimum, cumulative GPA of 2.5 at a U.S. university.
