Overview
This six week program combines an introduction to Ghana's historical, social, political, economic and cultural factors with a field study of contemporary and traditional health care issues in Ghana. The program consists of two sessions. Studens enroll in one of several four-credit course offerings for the first portion of the program. During the second three weeks, all students enroll in a two-credit course titled "Health Care in Ghana" that is open to all majors.
This course introduces students to health care needs, delivery systems and practices, both traditional and Western in Ghana. Evaluation of students' work will include community assessment, writing exercises, group presentations and a portfolio assignment.
Field trips will include Elmina Castle in Cape Coast, formerly used for the slave trade; Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti region; Bonwire to observe kente cloth weavers, and Kurofuforum to see the "lost wax" method of brass making; Volta Lake, the largest man-made lake created by the Akosombo Dam; nurseries, schools, craft centers, cloth markets, museums and other cultural institutions. Students will also be introduced to local cuisine, art and music, and village-base living as part of their practicum experience.
