Overview
At NYU in Berlin, students will experience a cosmopolitan city that holds a complex and crucial place in modern European history. It is difficult to imagine a more interesting place than the city of Berlin. As an emblem of Germany's continuing growth in economical and political stature, and as a crossroads between Western and Eastern Europe, Berlin has become a magnet not only for artists and intellectuals from Germany, but also from the rest of Europe, and indeed the world. Being a city of immigrants, it provides a mirror for the ongoing European debate concerning globalization and multiculturalism versus maintaining national and ethnic identity.
NYU in Berlin aims to provide its students with the means of understanding German culture and history within the context of lived experience. Thus, all classes include fieldwork or walking tours throughout the city, be it a visit to the film museum in Potsdam, an examination of the new experimental architecture at Potsdamer Platz, or an exploration of the literary and artistic underground scene in Prenzlauer Berg.
