Overview
NYU boasts one of the most spectacular sites on Florentine soil. The complex of 5 villas, located precisely one Roman mile from downtown Florence, predates the 16th century. The last renovations, before NYU's extensive recent modernizations, took place in the 1920s and 30s and display the rich and eclectic taste of the Acton family.
The Acton collection includes rare early medieval sculpture, late Renaissance painting, Tuscan majolica, and pieces from Harold Acton's extensive travels in China. La Pietra's historic gardens are second in importance only to the famous Boboli gardens! Between villas Natalia and Colletta (the student residences) and villa Ulivi which houses the academic center, is a vast field of olive groves.
Fig trees and trellised garden rooms ornament the grounds between the student residences. Despite its history, which NYU's renovations have meticulously preserved, Villa Ulivi has most modern conveniences: a cafeteria with a terrace overlooking the Tuscan countryside, computer labs w/ internet, a screening room and multi-media equipped classrooms.
