Overview
The St Gilgen International School opens for grades 6 - 10 in 2008 and will add grade 11 and 12 in successive years. Our mission is to offer a balanced and challenging international education to motivated and talented boarding and day students. With immediate access to superb outdoors and cultural pursuits the school provides outstanding opportunities. Admission is selective and based on previous academic results and a willingness to contribute and extend one's talents. The school provides scholarships for especially gifted students.
The St. Gilgen International School is committed to the framework of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma programme and will seek IBO authorization immediately after opening.
As special points of emphasis Film and Media Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and European Union projects are integrated in the curriculum. An artists in residence and special visitors programme offers additional engagement through special arts projects, music master classes, and performing arts activities. Mother-tongue maintenance is a high priority, supported by tutors and/or distance learning provisions. Academic courses are taught in English, with German, Spanish and other languages on offer. For Middle Years students whose native language is not English intensive English instruction can be provided.
Campus and residences are built in a beautiful lakefront park in St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee, a short distance from Salzburg. The schools design values openness, light and very strong links with the host community. For the first school year the school will operate in renovated historic buildings as well as new built academic and boarding facilities and include a state of the art library and media centre as the heart of the school, a performing arts and music centre in the house where Mozarts mother was born and lived, fine arts and media production studios with excellent provisions, and modern laboratories for the sciences. The school maintains a permanent office in St. Gilgen, the entire campus will be completed in 2008. At its doorstep are modern gymnasia, swimming pools, sailing and water activities, climbing walls, riding stables as well as skiing and mountaineering activities. Opportunities for all students to engage in local and international service projects are an essential part of the schools expectations.
