Overview
Iracambi Research Center is pleased to offer 19 day hands on GIS courses. Students will learn to
Understand the role of GIS in conservation/land use planning
Learn how to make maps using aerial photography
Learn how to collect and enter data using the GPS
Below is an outline of the itinerary for each course - they will run from March to July. The course mixes practical GIS work with a chance to get to know this beautiful part of Brazil.
Week 1
Introduction to Iracambi and the local area to provide a background to the GIS project.
Information on how to use all the equipment involved in the process and what is to be mapped.
Optional introduction to the Iracambi horses to help you get around.
Portuguese classes. Optional classes in capoeira; Brazilian kick boxing.
Evening discussions and talks relevant to the course and the area.
Weekend 1
Climb local mountains Graminha or Itajuru to see the local area.
(Rain check: learn how to make the delicious local foods)
Evening session in the village dancing forró
Day trip to a beautiful waterfall nearby; abseiling, trails, swimming, photography. .
Week 2
Field work mapping and creation of new data sets. Meet the local farmers whose land is begin mapped.
Training on the use of aerial photography with GIS.
Portuguese/capoeira classes
Weekend 2
Homestay with a local family to experience life in a rural community
Churrasco (BBQ) with forró.
Horse riding/ trail hiking/swimming, relaxing by the rock pool. .
Week 3
Download and interpret the information collected.
Brush up your map making skills and produce a hard copy of your work.
Portuguese/capoeira classes
Presentation of your work and farewell party.

The accommodation at Iracambi consists of brand new cabins - each sleeps four people, with two people in each same sex room. Couples can have their own room together. The homestays consist of much more basic accommodation, living with local people.

Costs
Include: Full board accommodation, homestay, trips, classes and talks, local transport, Portuguese lessons, teaching and materials.
Dates
Each course lasts for three weeks. The start dates are March 14/April 18/May16/June 13/July 18.
