Overview
The UMass Summer 2005 Japanese Language, Culture, and Theater in Japan Program offers academic instruction and credit in Japanese culture and language, at all levels from zero beginner to advanced, while students participate in local internships and receive training in traditional Japanese arts, in particular the traditional Bunraku puppet theater.
The 10-week program begins with 10 days in the Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, duriing which students experience the culture of the ancient capital cities and the urban Japan. The program then moves to the small city of Iida, located northeast of Nagoya at the foot of the mountains in the "Southern Alps" of Nagano Prefecture, home of the 1998 Winter Olympics, where students will live with Japanese host families, attend classes taught by University of Massachusetts faculty, participate in internships with local enterprises and organizations that help to develop fluency in both language and culture, and receive training in the traditional Bunraku puppet theater from members of the 300-year-old Imada and Kuroda Puppet Troupes.
In addition to time in Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Iida, the UMass Japan Summer 2005 Program includes overnight fieldtrips and day trips to Tokyo, the Izu Penesula, Gifu, Nagoya, and Matsumoto and one free week in mid-July during which students may travel independently in Japan or remain with their families in Iida.
The Program culminates with student participation in the 2005 Iida International Puppetry Festival, the largest puppetry festival in Japan with more than 150 troupes from Japan and around the world. Students will perform at the Festival, as well as assist as guides and interpreters, as approrpiate.
