Overview
The Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Beirut will be holding an intensive summer Arabic program from June 24 until August 7, 2009. The program offers intensive Modern Standard Arabic instruction at six different levels: Introductory, High Introductory, Low Intermediate, Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced. The typical daily workload includes five hours of MSA and one hour of Lebanese dialect, followed by lectures, field trips, clubs and movies which are integrated into the program. Students should also expect at least four hours of homework each day. The total of 186 classroom hours is the equivalent of 9 credit hours at AUB, which may be transferred to other universities.
The program uses the Georgetown Arabic language textbooks by Brustad, al-Batal, and al-Tonsi and other supplementary materials.
Students may stay in accommodation on AUB campus overlooking the Mediterranean.
The application deadline is March 30, 2009.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Students earn 9 credit hours of Modern Standard Arabic which may be transferred to their home universities.

CAMES will arrange for housing in the student dorms on AUB campus for those who need it. We also can provide some limited assistance to students who prefer to rent apartments off campus.
Program Costs
The fees for the program will range between $4,327 and $4,586.
Costs
Include: Tuition for Modern Standard Arabic (obligatory): $3,732; Accommodation in AUB dorms: $682 (private); $517 (semi-private); $423 (shared); Health Insurance: $130; Sports Facilities Usage: $42. Only the $3,732 tuition fee is obligatory. All other fees are optional. Students may choose to live off campus and to forgo the Sports Facilities fee. Students who do not sign up for health insurance through AUB must provide proof that they have another health insurance plan that covers them in Lebanon. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required upon acceptance and will be deducted from each applicant's tuition fees.
