Overview
The Cornell in Rome Program gives students an opportunity to study some of the world's greatest treasures of art and architecture, and to see and understand the power of ancient Rome, the brilliance of the Renaissance, and the beauty and complexity of the modern European city.
Offered by the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning since 1986, the program is primarily intended for students majoring in these three disciplines, but is also open to non-majors interested in architecture, landscape architecture, fine arts, art history, architecture history, urban studies, and city planning. Maximum enrollment is 55-60 students each semester. The program provides extensive studio work, on-site courses, and a rich field trip itinerary.
The program is open to students from outside Cornell. Students interested in architecture design or art studio courses must have completed at least two years of a university studio program before their semester of intended study in Rome begins. Architecture design students must be enrolled in a five year B-Arch program. A portfolio review is required for admission into the art or architecture studio (but is not required for those wishing to take architecture history, art history, photography, etc).
Cornell faculty members are in residence to teach courses, and they are joined by visiting faculty members chosen among local and internationally known scholars, critics, and artists.
Cornell's facility is located in a seventeenth century palazzo in the heart of the historic center of Rome; furnished student apartments are available within walking distance.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Cornell awards credits which are then transferred into a visiting student's school. Graduate credit is only offered for graduate students at Cornell through the City and Regional Planning Department who participate in pre-arranged internships at an international agency in Rome.
Eligibility
Semester is intended for juniors or seniors in good academic standing with a demonstrated interest in architecture, art, and/or planning.
