Study in Antigua Guatemala at the Research Center for Mesoamerican Studies (CIRMA) with University of Arizona credits
Summer Session: June 18 - August 2, 2005
Deepen your comprehension of the social, historical and political dynamics of Guatemala and Central America, while living in a fascinating colonial town!
This six week intensive program is open to University of Arizona students and non University of Arizona Students. The program includes courses on Spanish language, and Latin American history, culture and politics. Formal classes will be complemented and enriched by a series of conferences and study tours led by knowledgeable national scholars. Students will also have privileged access to CIRMAs unique documentary and photographic collections and opportunities to do volunteer work with CIRMAs ongoing research, library, or outreach programs.
Organized and coordinated by el Centro de Investigaciones Regionales de Mesoamérica, Cirma, one of the regions premier social science research centers, dedicated to creating a new culture of research and public dialogue on the challenges facing Central America today, preserving the regions historical memory, and fostering a new generation of social, cultural, and academic leaders.
45 minutes from Guatemala City, Antigua Guatemala is nowadays one of the most popular sites in Central America. Founded in 1543, the city is filled with monumental buildings of ornate Spanish colonial architecture and dominating a large region inhabited mainly by indigenous people of diverse origins, today Antigua Guatemala is one of the most important cultural centers in Central America and a vibrant city.
