Overview
LPI programs in Guanajuato, Mexico, are all-inclusive. Program participants live with host families and take classes at the University of Guanajuato, which is an accredited university and issues all transcripts. Upon successful completion of the program, LPI students will earn 6 semester hours (9 quarter units) of academic credit. Experience the thrill of living abroad while earning college credit in one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico.
Guanajuato (pop. 120,000), located four and a half hours northwest of Mexico City, remains one of Mexico’s most well-preserved cities. Guanajuato is home to the world-renowned Teatro Juárez and many beautiful 18th century cathedrals which were financed by the wealth of the area's silver mining industry. Its older buildings still appear relatively untouched by modern construction, lending the town a distinctive European air. Built by the citizens in the early 1900s to divert flooding of the Río Guanajuato, the city has an intricate system of underground tunnels. Today, these tunnels-turned-streets contribute to the town’s timeless appearance by eliminating many of the cars, which would otherwise crowd the town’s center. Guanajuato’s rich history, former inaccessibility, and small size all help to create a truly unique atmosphere.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
LPI students in Guanajuato will have the opportunity to earn up to 6 semester college credits. Students will receive an official transcript from the University of Guanajuato. A copy of the official transcript will be mailed to each student after successful completion of the program. In order to receive college credit, students may request an official transcript be sent to their U.S. University. The overall LPI experience gives these students a competitive edge over their peers when returning to the USA. Language professors are continuously amazed by their students’ enhanced proficiency, and universities notice and appreciate the level of maturity and ambition demonstrated in applicants who have taken the initiative to live and study abroad while still in high school.
Eligibility
Students must have at least one year of high school Spanish or the equivalent and must be 15 years of age by the program start date.
Housing/Accommodation
•
Homestay / Host Family
All LPI Spanish programs include a "homestay" accommodation. LPI's host families will vary from a large extended family all living under one roof, to a warm and doting widow. Unless requested, there will normally be two LPI students per home. All of our host families are personally interviewed by our full-time, on-site staff and on the last day of each LPI program, participants fill out an evaluation of their host family. This ensures that our host family database is continually updated, and that the families know what aspects of their stay students enjoyed the most, and what they need to change or modify for their next guests. The LPI host family will provide participants with three meals a day and will provide laundry service at least once a week.
