Overview
The Summer Institute in Spain is designed for students with intermediate and advanced levels of Spanish proficiency. Courses are taught by University of Kansas faculty and staff and native instructors from Spain. The academic program begins with a nine-day tour by bus from Madrid to various cities in the central and southern regions of the peninsula. Following the tour, the group settles in Barcelona for five weeks of intensive coursework. During this five-week period, the group takes two weekend excursions, to the Dalí Museum on the Costa Brava and to the Valle de Boí for a local festival.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Six hours of academic credit are granted by The University of Kansas upon successful completion of the program. Only in special cases approved by the Director will students be allowed to carry less than six credits.
Eligibility
The Intensive Intermediate Spanish Language option is open to undergraduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university who have completed at least two semesters (or the equivalent) of college-level Spanish. The Advanced Spanish Studies option is open to undergraduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university who have completed at least six semesters (or the equivalent) of college-level coursework in Spanish. Minimum 2.5 GPA required.

During the travel period, students stay in double or triple-occupancy hotel rooms. Breakfast is included, but students are responsible for lunch and dinner.
In Barcelona, students will take classes and live in the residencia of a colegio mayor, Sant Jordi, located in the heart of Barcelona within walking distance of museums, restaurants, and shopping districts. Double occupancy rooms have desks and beds; the residencia also offers a small gym, music room, small library, study room, lounge area, and snack bar. Breakfast and lunch will be taken in the residencia dining hall daily.
Program Costs
2008 Program Fee: Approximately $4,490 ($4,690 for non-KU students).
Tuition and Fees: Estimated tuition and fees for 6 credit hours (based on standard tuition rate): $1,169 *
*Actual expenses for KU students will vary by the student’s individual tuition compact. Non-KU students will pay the standard tuition rate listed above.
Note: All dates, costs, and program information are subject to change as necessary due to fluctuations in the exchange rate or other reasons.
Costs
Include: The fee includes KU tuition and fees, room, some meals (breakfast on the tour; breakfast and lunch in Barcelona), entry to cultural events during the travel period, orientation, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation services, and administrative costs.
Additional costs: Airfare, passport fees, some meals, incidental personal expenses and personal travel expenses.
Financial Aid
Yes.
KU students who qualify for summer financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell or SEOG Grants, and scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program.
Limited supplemental scholarships are available to KU undergraduates. Applications are available at the Office of Study Abroad. You can also download the scholarship application. The scholarship application deadline is March 1.
Non-KU students should check into the financial resources available to them at their home institutions.
