Overview
Spanish classes in a picture-perfect environment: Enjoy the Caribbean flair of the Dominican Republic

The IIC, founded in 1994, is the Spanish Department of the Language & Culture Institute EDASE. We are an intercultural institute in the Dominican Republic, teaching Spanish to foreigners and English and German to Dominicans.

Students can choose between two locations: One school is in the country's capital Santo Domingo, a Caribbean-style metropolis with more than 2.5 million inhabitants. The other school is located in the small sea town of Sosua, famous for its incredible beaches and variety of water sports activities. Students can also divide their course between both locations and thus, discover the country in its splendid diversity.

Program:
Courses: Classes in mini-groups as well as private lessons are available.
Active holidays: Various special programs combine Spanish classes with leisure activities like scuba diving, wind/kite surfing or dancing.
DELE: Preparation courses for the DELE are available at both IIC schools

All our Spanish teachers are native speakers with an academic background and long-year experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Institute in SOSUA / CABARETE:
With its beautiful beaches, restaurants, discos and sports facilities, Sosua is perfect for those students who wish to combine studying Spanish with numerous leisure activities. Surfer's paradise Cabarete, one of the best wind and kite surfing spots in the world, is just some kilometers away.

IIC Sosua is located in the town area "El Batey", only 5 minutes by walking from the city center and Sosua's main beach. The school building, sheltered by impressive old trees and lush vegetation, offers the ideal ambiance for concentrated learning in a tropical surrounding. Classes often take place on one of the four shadowed terraces.

Institute in SANTO DOMINGO:
Santo Domingo is a fascinating, typical Caribbean metropolis. If one wants to combine his Spanish studies with acquiring a deeper insight into the cultural and social aspects of Dominican everyday life, then Santo Domingo is the best choice to make. Students there can explore museums, the colonial zone and a bustling night-life.

IIC Santo Domingo is located in the university zone in the immediate vicinity of the UASD, the country’s biggest and most famous university. There is plenty of opportunity to come into contact with Dominican students at any one of the various street cafes or kiosks in the area.

Yes. In Germany, our intensive group courses are accredited in 6 states (Bundeslaender) for the "Bildungsurlaub" which allows employees to take 5 additional days per year off for educational purposes.

Dates
It is important for us to find the right course for every student. That is why students above the level of an absolute beginner will be asked to take a placement test prior to their course start to identify their exact level. We also change groups during a course if a student or we get the impression that another class could fit better. In general, we distinguish between four language levels: absolute beginner, beginner with knowledge, intermediate, advanced.

Classes are usually from Monday till Friday. We plan in "school lessons", that means: One lesson has 45 minutes. In the group course standard e.g. lessons are from 9:00 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. in the morning (4 lessons). If you choose an intensive group course you would have 2 more lessons in the afternoon (1:30 - 3:00 p.m.). Depending on the amount of different course levels at a time group courses sometimes also might take place completely in the afternoon. Private lessons are usually in the afternoons.

Our classes start every Monday, the group courses for absolute beginners every other Monday. If Monday is a holiday, the course starts on Tuesday. The starting dates for beginners' group courses are:

in 2007:
8, 22 January; 5, 19 February; 5, 19 March; 2, 16, 30 April; 14, 28 May; 11, 25 June; 9, 23 July; 6, 20 August; 3, 17 September; 1, 15, 29 October; 12, 26 November; 10, 24 December

No lessons will take place on the following public holidays (missed lessons will not be re-scheduled):
6th January (Epiphany); 21st January (Dia de la Altagracia); 27th February (Independence Day); 6th April (Good Friday); 1st May (Labour Day); 24th September (Dia de la Mercedes); 25th December (Christmas Day)

We do not have a registration final date, so also short-term registration is possible. But we ask our students to register at least 4 weeks prior to the course starting date to be able to guarantee the wished course place and accommodation. Registration is quite easy: We send you a registration form by e-mail you would complete and send back to us again. After receiving the information we will confirm your booking.
