Overview
Projects Abroad sends volunteers abroad to 17 countries to do internships and service projects. Since being founded in 1992, we have grown to a team of 130 people around the world that sends 2000 volunteers annually. Volunteers can go at any time, for as long as they wish.
In Bolivia we work mainly with the University of San Simon, Cochabamba, to teach English to University students.
The level of English in Cochabamba is generally low. This is because Quechua, an American language, is the native tongue for most local people, and only their second is Spanish. English is way behind in terms of most people's priorities. But this is not true at the University. Here, English is seen as a gateway to learning - to more books, to different professors and ultimately to international jobs. Off the tourist track, Cochabamba doesn't generally attract a lot of native English speakers so, as a Projects Abroad volunteer, the linguistics department will welcome you.
You can expect to teach between 14 and 20 hours a week, but remember you'll need more time to prepare a structured lesson. Teaching adults or students your own age is fun and rewarding. They have chosen to study at University and so want to be there. Just because they are not 10 year-old kids doesn't mean they won't enjoy playing games in your lesson - it makes a change from their regular lectures! Your supervisor will be happy to guide you with lesson ideas if necessary.
