Overview
Offering a truly unique immersive educational experience for college students, taught in English. The changing face of rural Europe: explore culture, environment, tradition and the Italian language in Sardinia, Italy.
Our program is structured to offer the students the chance to concentrate their time in one place, and to get to know an area and the people. The program is a traditional 15-week semester compressed into a 12-week academic program. We believe that it is possible, by immersing oneself into a culture and actively participating in community life, to become part of the culture and a place, learning even more than one does in the traditional classroom academic setting.
Courses are in diverse areas: the sciences, agriculture, studio art, and archeology, Italian and Sardinian studies. These programs are not exclusive of each other and students are able to choose courses from all areas. However, all students start out taking 2 weeks of an intensive Italian language course at the beginning of the semester and before regular courses begin. They also are required to take Sardinian Culture and Rural Traditions, a course that also helps with integration into the culture.
The program provides an excellent opportunity and a perfect place to study the origins and influence of the Western Mediterranean civilizations on Italy and Europe. A Bronze Age civilization existed in Sardinia controlling, trading with, and influencing the Western Mediterranean before the Romans; before the Etruscans; before the Greeks; before the Phoenicians; contemporaneous with Egypt and Crete.
The SAS program combines academic coursework with active involvement in a local Italian community integrated with in-depth visits to archeological and historical sites all over Sardinia, that are included in the program for no additional fees, to provide a true cultural experience abroad.
Another advantage we see to this approach is that, with our program, at the end of the 12-week academic period students actually have 3 to 4 weeks of solid time available to explore this newly integrated culture on their own, not just 2 days here, 2 days there, traveling over the weekend, which is what occurs in traditional study abroad programs. SAS also has a mid-program week break that students can use for traveling.
