Overview
Projects Abroad sends volunteers abroad to 17 countries to do internships and service projects. Since being founded in 1992, we have grown to a team of 130 people around the world that sends 2000 volunteers annually. Volunteers can go at any time, for as long as they wish.
Our care placements in Peru are based in kindergartens in and around the Sacred Valley. Volunteers play an important part in creating a nurturing environment for young children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Projects Abroad runs a pilot kindergarten program in Media Luna (a few miles from Urubamba), where materials, activities and strategies are tried out before we try to implement them in other kindergartens in the Valley. The official agreement is that we are responsible for the in-service training of the kindergarten teachers in the province of Calca, so volunteers are also welcome to help prepare materials for those workshops too.
Children aged 3 to 5 attend the kindergartens, and we work primarily in rural towns where many families lead a subsistence lifestyle. The children typically come from poor families where developing the children's academic abilities in preparation for school hasn't been a priority.
You will assist the class supervisor with activities such as cutting, sticking, painting, and teaching them to spell and write. You may wish to develop projects with the children using your own interest in art, music, sport or drama.
Projects Abroad Peru have teamed up with local medical staff to work on a Maternity Care project. This is a great project for volunteers, male or female, who wish to gain either nursing or midwifery experience, or simply to help on an unusual care placement.
Volunteers currently work in the Cusco region in a variety of small health centres in the Andes.
For this placement you will need some Spanish language knowledge, otherwise you will not be able to fully participate in the project and maximize the opportunities presented to you. Local women about to give birth will not speak any English, so in order to communicate with them Spanish is essential.
