Overview
This four-week program offers you an intense immersion in the extraordinary city of Rome. We will use the Eternal City as our laboratory as we study visual culture: we will explore the history of the city through its monuments, and use the masterpiece of Western art available to us in Rome to examine issues in the history of art. We will also embrace the dynamics of the art of contemporary Rome and its links to the past both in the drawing studio and in the field.
UNO in Rome is your opportunity to get to know one of the most exciting European capitals and at the same time to earn university-level credit in classes that make use of this wonderful opportunity to engage the city and its visual culture at first hand. At the same time you will be able to sample the beauty and delights of this Mediterranean city and, of course, of Italy too.
THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM: The core of the program is a four-week course of study in art history and the visual arts. All classes will be taught on the streets and in the churches and museums of the city with some classroom time as needed. Each class, with the exception of Survival Italian, offers three hours of college-level academic credit. Classes are held from Monday to Thursday to allow for long weekends for individual travel or group excursions.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Students will be housed in accommodations in the heart of old Rome. Breakfast is always included, and some meals during the days when classes meet will also be included.
TRAVEL AND LEISURE: UNO Rome is a college level program with a serious focus on visual culture. Students are certainly encouraged to use their leisure time to their best advantage as long as they attend mandatory meetings, classes and excursions. There are several free long weekends for personal travel.
