Overview
The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies is offering a new, exciting, interdisciplinary course in sustainable development, natural history, and the desert environent. The course is designed for English speaking, college students and graduates. This course focuses on the unique aspects of the desert environment and its natural resources, while introducing students to environmental challenges that are connected to human settlement in the desert. These topics will be addressed from a trans-boundary perspective (Israel, Jordan). Studies take place both in the classroom and in the field, and include trips to the Dead Sea and Jerusalem, Eilat, and Aqaba (Jordan). The Arava Institute is set on the grounds of Kibbutz Ketura, an oasis village in the scenic Arava Valley - a desert in the Syrio-African rift. The Institute is located 50 km north of the Red Sea resort cities of Eilat, Israel and Aqaba, Jordan. This is a uniquely tranquil area of Israel. Students live in the Arava Institute dormitories, and eat in Kibbutz Keturas dining room. In addition, Kibbutz facilities such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, soccer field, and library are available to students. Students are welcome to attend the Kibbutz egalitarian synagogue services.
