Overview
The Asolo Song Festival and Institute for Song Interpretation is the first segment in the series of summer festivals that culminates in the 28th annual Incontri Asolani festival of chamber music, which draws such distinguished artists as Krystian Zimerman, Ian Bostridge, and Natasha Korsakova. The festival is sponsored and organized by the City of Asolo, the Consortium of Universities for International Studies, which comprises 37 accredited U.S. public universities, and CIMBA, the Consortium's Italian affiliate. The program focuses primarily on the artistic interpretation of Art Song through careful study, preparation and performance. In addition, performance repertoire will include works for solo piano, chamber music, and operatic excerpts. The program takes place in the beautiful Veneto region of Italy, forty-five kilometers north of Venice. The Consortium university sponsor for this program is the University of Kansas, who will grant up to seven course credits for participation in the program.
The Song Festival and Institute provides meaningful international performance experience while supporting artistic growth through rigorous study of the issues of song interpretation. Vocalists and pianists enroll in a multi-sectioned Song Interpretation course that concentrates on the transfer of music analytical skills to the performance of song. Students receive individualized coaching in performance and diction. In addition, vocalists take private voice instruction while pianists prepare solo and collaborative repertoire in lessons and a performance seminar. Students also take part in a spoken Italian workshop and attend masterclasses with well-known Italian artists. Students are encouraged to participate in numerous culturally enriching activities organized especially for Consortium students.
