Overview
THIS SUMMER INSTITUTE on intranational conflict is designed for people interested in understanding the dynamics of civic strife and exploring approaches that can help resolve it. The course considers peacemaking strategies—including official-level international and regional approaches, the use of external sanctions and incentives, and “track II” initiatives—in the context of the ethnic, economic, local governance, and regional factors that tend to perpetuate intranational conflict. It also addresses strategies for peacebuilding and conflict prevention—including governance reform, economic reform and development, prosecutions for human rights abuses, and truth and reconciliation commissions. The course draws on faculty from not only NYU Wagner but also the University of Amsterdam; it also utilizes renowned U.S. and European practitioners serve as guest presenters.
