Overview
API offers comprehensive study abroad programs in the wonderful Costa Rican city of San Joaquin de Flores. The Instituto San Joaquin de Flores is a colonial-style building built specifically to be an academic and language school. Topics available include Spanish language and culture, history, business, and environmental sciences. Advanced level students may take classes at other nearby universities. Students typically receive 12-18 credits for a semester; 6 for a summer.
API students who study at the Instituto San Joaquin de Flores will have the option of participating in the Sea Turtle Conservation Program. The objective of the program is to protect the sea turtle nests from human poachers and, more recently, from the erosion of the beach. Volunteers work with the Asociacion ANAI, a small non-profit organization that was formed in 1978 to pursue sustainable development in Costa Rica's Talamanca region. This is an ideal opportunity for those who are interested in hands-on conservation work and data collection. Volunteers mainly patrol the beaches and retrieve and relocate turtle eggs and nests. The diverse ecosystems concentrated within the area of the refuge (beach, mangrove, coral reef and tropical rainforest) also provide excellent opportunities for independent study and wildlife observation. Housing and three meals per day are included in the program fee for this volunteer opportunity.
San Joaquin de Flores offers a quality academic experience and the opportunity to discover small town Costa Rica at its best. Conveniently located just 10 miles from the Capital San Jose, San Joaquin de Flores allows one to avoid the daily traffic and stress of the city yet still maintain easy access to the shopping and night life.
