Overview
The Augustana Summer Spanish Program (SSP) is now in its 17th year of connecting US university students with Latin America. The SSP provides an in-depth look at life in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and Peru through academic classroom experience, homestays with Ecuadorian families, and extensive travel through Ecuador (including the Amazon Jungle) and Peru (including Machu Picchu).
The academic portion of the program is taught exclusively in Spanish by native speakers, and students earn 9 semester credits (granted through Augustana College). All levels of Spanish are welcome, with literature and discussion classes available for advanced students.
All travel is done with both Ecuadorian and American guides, and offers trips ranging from volcano-filled valleys to the steamy jungle. At the end of the program, students take an 11-day tour through Peru, stopping on the desert coast, the capital of Lima, the former capital of the Incas, Cuzco, and the "lost city" of Machu Picchu.
During students' stay in Cuenca, they live with an Ecuadorian family within walking distance of the school.
