Overview
The European College of Liberal Arts, Berlin will begin its 6th International Summer University (ISU) on the 14 of July 2006. The ISU is a liberal arts program featuring a common, interdisciplinary, team-taught core course, excursions, site visits to important cultural centers in Berlin and frequent guest lecturers which help to insure a breadth of learning opportunities. The student-body and faculty form a close-knit international community which lives on the college campus throughout the 6 summer weeks.

The central theme of the ISU 2006 will be provided by Joseph Conrad's novel "Under Western Eyes" as well as a range of other works from Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" to Dostoevsky’s "Notes from the Underground". These texts will be complemented by a series of relevant films. The ISU will look at Western perceptions of cultural otherness which shape the West’s notion of itself, and open up a range of intriguing questions related to this idea. Besides a knowledge of these texts, the programme will provide students with skills in critical thinking, effective reasoning and articulate expression of ideas.

Students receive six credits for the completion of the ISU programme.
