Overview
Study Japanese language, culture, and theater--with an emphasis on the traditional puppet theater known as Bunraku--in Japan for nine weeks and nine university credits. Japanese language is taught at all levels, including zero beginner. Students receive training in traditional puppetry with members of a 300-year-old Bunraku troupe. Students study Japanese culture through lectures and fieldtrips in Kyoto, Nara, and Nagano. Language coursework involves both classroom and community activities for real experiential learning. The program begins with visits to Nara and Kyoto then moves to its base in Iida (pop. 110,000), in Nagano Prefecture in central Japan. The small city offers opportunities to meet friendly people in community activities while the natural setting provides chances for hiking, climbing, swimming, and biking. Students experience Japan at ground level with opportunities to do more than just view the country as tourists. Students can become part of the local Japanese community to learn the culture and language as they participate in traditional performing arts and other activities.
