Overview
The Project Year (PY) at ECLA is an interdisciplinary humanities programme concentrating on history, literature and philosophy. The programme has two main aims: to cultivate students’ understanding of the concerns and methods of those three disciplines, and to initiate students in the fruitful conversation amongst the disciplines. The PY has three components:
Individual project – The individual project allows PY students to pursue one intellectual interest for an entire year under the guidance of a faculty supervisor with relevant expertise. The work on the project culminates with a 25-page essay to be submitted at the end of the Spring term.
Core course – The aim of the PY core course is to explore abstract questions about interdisciplinarity, though the course does not approach them in the abstract. Every term is dedicated to an author, book, claim, problem, issue or phenomenon, which students and faculty approach through two or more of the disciplines represented at ECLA. All PY core seminars are co-taught by two or more faculty from different disciplines. The focus of each seminar is a conversation between disciplines to which students are introduced as active participants.
Electives – Each term, PY students choose one elective course in which to pursue in more depth one of the core disciplines or to explore areas such as art history, film theory, music or performance arts as a complement.
