Overview
Art History, Studio Art & Italian Language for High School Students:
Our pre-college summer program in Florence, Italy, is designed for students completing grades 10-12. The academic component includes three primary subjects: Art History, Studio Art and Italian Language - students will choose only two of the three options. Previous knowledge of Italian is not required to participate in the program.
Students and staff live together in a centrally-located private apartment complex in the heart of historic Florence. Students will learn how to live with a group of peers, in preparation for a successful college experience -- they will share house responsibilities, shop for groceries in local markets and cook together.
In addition to their morning Art History classes, students will then have the opportunity to choose one among four options for the afternoon class offered three days a week: Italian Language, Drawing, Photography, or Advanced Oil Painting. Students will also have the opportunity to take optional art-related workshops throughout the program. In addition, the Florence program will offer recreational, cultural, and social activities based on student interest.
The program balances structured activities and free time. Abbey Road staff organizes recreational activities such as soccer, tennis, biking, swimming and beach trips. The program will also organize cultural and social activities such as concerts, museum trips, conversation exchanges, movies, and dancing. Plenty of free time is scheduled to explore the beautiful historic center of Florence, take advantage of the great shopping, and enjoy the outdoor cafe culture.
The program also includes day-trips and overnight excursions around Tuscany, including Siena, San Gimignano, Chianti, Viareggio, and more. Additionally, during one weekend of the program, the group will travel to Rome for three days.
