Overview
This program is intended to familiarize students with the architecture of South America. Participants will see examples of native, colonial, modern, and contemporary architecture in the following cities detailed below in Peru and Brazil. In Peru, participants will be exposed to the Inca civilization by visiting the city of Machu Pichu and the Uros floating islands on Lake Titicaca. Students will stay in the colonial city of Cusco. In Brazil, participants will become familiar with the work of Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa, Lina Bo Bardi, and landscape architect Burle Marx. 3 cities will be studied: Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and Curitiba, considered one of the best examples of urban planning world-wide. In addition, there will also be a one day tour of Sao Paulo’s architectural landmarks.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Participants will receive nine hours of architecture elective credit.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university.

Hostel
Participants will stay in centrally located hotels in all cities except for Rio de Janeiro where participants will stay in a small hostel residence.
Program Costs
(2006) Program Fee: $7,800 ($8,000 for non-KU students).
Costs
Include: The program fee includes tuition, fees, accommodations, some group dinners, cultural activities, lodging in all program cities, roundtrip airfare from Brazil to Peru, land and air transportation to all program cities in Peru and Brazil, transportation to all program activities, orientation, and emergency medical evacuation and repatriation services.
Additional costs: Airfare, most meals, passport and visa fees, and personal expenses.
Financial Aid
Yes.
KU students who qualify for summer financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell or SEOG Grants, and scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program.
Limited supplemental scholarships are available to KU undergraduates. Applications are available at the Office of Study Abroad. You can also download the scholarship application. The scholarship application deadline is March 1.
Non KU students should check into financial aid options through their home institution.
