Overview
Teach Conversational English in two locations, Shangai in the south or the truly ethnic town of Yantai in Shandong province. Volunteers are desperately needed on many of our projects because the schools generally have a lack of teachers, high illiteracy rates and poor funding. We work with schools, orphanages, social care centers, adult learning centers and more, and always with the objective of helping the local community. The children benefit enormously from your efforts, both academically and because they become more confident. Teaching the children is hugely satisfying.
Start your time in Shanghai with a One-week Intensive Mandarin Course. You dont need any Mandarin to teach, as the children have a reasonable level of English, but learning a little of the language would definitely be of benefit to you while in the country.
You can combine your teaching with learning Mandarin, or Martial Arts. You can train in the following martial arts during your course: Wu Shu, Tae Kwon Do, Chinese Boxing, Karate, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Shaolin and Xingyi. All of these originate in China except Karate, which is from Japan, and Tae Kwon Do, which is from Korea. There are usually two or three classes, each one in a different martial art, every evening.
Travellers arranges voluntary work placements overseas. These projects are open to everybody from 17-99, and all nationalities are welcome!
No qualifications are required to volunteer - just enthusiasm to help and a desire to experience a new culture, from the inside. Travellers projects are very flexible (2 weeks - 1 year) and varied.
You can also participate in worthwhile conservation work - from hand nurturing baby orangutans and preparing them for the wild, to gathering necessary research for endangered species on a South African game park.
Travellers also provides many work experience placements in law, medicine, journalism, veterinary, design and more. In addition, you can participate in structured language courses or culturally specific courses (capoeira, tango, meditation) alongside your volunteering to really absorb the culture.
All your food and accommodation and in country transfers and transportation are included in the cost as well as excellent 24/7 support and back up staff. You will receive plenty of preparation information and support before your departure and Travellers will keep in touch throughout your project to ensure you are happy and well on your placement.

All Housing is included in the cost. All accommodation is approved by Head Office staff for security, comfort and cleanliness.

$1,700-$2,019 USD (for 1 to 3 months)

Costs
Include: Full support from the moment of booking and throughout your placement to your return home. There are support staff in every destination and a 24 hour emergency international telephone line direct to the Head Office. All food (3 meals a day plus drinks and snacks) are provided. Accommodation is provided (whether a rented house, a hotel/hostel, homestay, apartment or flat). All in country travel is provided for the placement. You will also be met from the airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. This manager will also be on call 24 hours a day and you will see them frequently. Pre-departure you will receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flight not included.
