Overview
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS ON SOCIAL SCIENCES
In summer 2007 the International Summer University of the University of Tartu will offer beside language programs several social science programs, which are designed for English-speaking international students from all over the world. The International Summer University will offer courses in the areas where University of Tartu has earned special recognition in international academic circles.
University of Tartu is the largest public university in Estonia with the student body of around 17,000 and about 3,000 academic and administrative personnel. It has 11 departments and 6 colleges. There are around 500 international students and international agreements with around 40 institutions. As a university aiming for scientific and academic excellence, it is part of several European networks of universities, such as the Coimbra Group.
Dates of the social science programs of the International Summer University: July 23 to August 11, 2007. The programs are offered in the English language.
The program is divided into three one-week sessions:
I session: July 23 to July 26- Tartu, in the premises of the University of Tartu main campus
II session: July 30 to August 2- Pärnu, in the premises of Tartu University Pärnu College
III session: August 6 to August 11 - Tallinn, in the premises of Tartu University College of Law and English College.
Between the sessions there will be field-trips: the weekend between Session I and II: July 27 to July 29 - field-trip to Narva (the most eastern town of the European Union, bordering Russia); the weekend between Session II and III: August 3 to August 5 - field-trip to Saaremaa (Estonian’s largest island and a popular tourist destination).

Basic facts about the University of Tartu:
Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu has almost 18 000 students and is famous for research-based education and lively student traditions. Estonia offers a unique perspective on the successful transition to democracy and recent accession to the EU. Tartu is Estonia’s second largest city, with 100 000 people, and is located 2.5 hours from the airport and sea port of Tallinn, with connections to major cities in Europe and Russia. English is spoken widely here, and with students making up one fifth of the population, Tartu is a true University town.
Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Each course is awarded a certain number of credits in European Credir Transfer System (ECTS).
Eligibility
Applicants must be graduates or currently enrolled at a higher education institution (college, university), min 19 years of age and in good academic standing.

Program Costs
Tuition: 850 EUR. The fee covers participation in the lectures, participation in meetings and site visitations organized as part of the academic program. The fee also covers the cost of course materials which will be handed to the participant during the first course meeting.
Accommodation and cultural program: 650 EUR. The fee covers the accommodation in hostels during the academic program (two persons in one room); participation in the field-trips, transportation and accommodation during the two weekends; transportation from and to the student point of arrival and departure in Tallinn; transportation between the cities where the program is conducted; and other cultural events organized for all the participants of the International Summer University
