Overview
CELL’s study abroad programs focus on community-based solutions to environmental and social problems. Semester programs consist of a combination of structured course work, field-learning experiences, service-learning opportunities, and development of individual action plans for environmental stewardship. Our programs are interdisciplinary by design and fit any major or program of study. We currently offer the following programs:
CELL Iceland Program
During a CELL Iceland program, you will explore one of the most remote, geologically unique, and environmentally friendly countries in the world. You will live in one of the world’s first and truly unique ecovillages. You will learn about the principles of sustainability from a country committed to producing clean, renewable energy. You will explore some of the world’s most breathtaking sites and learn how an island nation is leading the world toward a path of sustainability. For more information, please visit CELL’s website.
CELL Costa Rica/Nicaragua Program
Through experiential learning, you will explore diverse tropical habitats, participate in service-learning projects installing solar power systems in rural villages and protecting endangered sea turtles, and along the way you will learn about the human and ecological issues facing this unique region of the world. For more details, we invite you to visit CELL’s website.

Academic Credit
Academic credit is available.
Students receive 15 credits either directly through their college of attendance or through a partnership CELL has with Lesley University.
Lesley University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to offer college credit to students. Lesley is a diverse, coeducational university based in Cambridge, Massachusetts with learning sites in 21 states and in Israel. It has been recognized as one of the “best” in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings, included in the Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern Regional Colleges” listings, and recognized in Backpacker Magazine as having one of the top five outdoor education programs. Lesley puts a high value and emphasis on experiential education.
Each course syllabus is evaluated by Lesley faculty with expertise in the area of study, and reviewed and approved by the Provost. CELL works with Lesley to create courses that meet college level academic criteria as well as our learning objectives. In accordance with Lesley’s requirements, the primary academic instructors for our courses have a master’s or Ph.D. in the program’s field of study.
Course work is offered at the third-year (junior) level but is open to all college students (freshmen through seniors).
Students will receive instruction on how to apply for academic credit through Lesley University as part of the application/acceptance process. However, should you have further questions about academic credit, please contact us and we will be happy to provide additional information.
Eligibility
Our unique study abroad programs focus on “sustainability through community” and are designed for students who believe that they can make a difference in the world: students who would like to play an active role in creating long-term solutions to problems facing our global communities and environment. If this resonates with you, please contact us, and we can have a chat to see if our programs are a right fit for you.
