Overview
Our new program in Avignon is designed for students completing grades 10-12 with at least 3 years of French. This program focuses on the performing arts and is designed for students who are interested in theater arts as both spectators and participants, as well as in French language and culture immersion.
Our residential program in Avignon combines two advantages: a pre-college experience where our students study, live and cook with a group of peers in a vibrant town whose name has become synonymous with performing arts in France, and a language experience facilitated by the Abbey Road students and faculty.
Three afternoons a week students will also participate in performing arts seminars and workshops. This aspect of instruction will make the best use of the many resources of this 'City of Theater' and its exciting festival. The Avignon program will also offer recreational, cultural and artistic activities and workshops based on student interest.

About Avignon
Dominating the Rhône valley, the fortified city of Avignon has shed its armor and opened its gates to share its beautiful architecture and fascinating history with many visitors from all over the world. This is most evident during the city's summer theater festival when the Palais des Papes, the Pont d'Avignon and the cobblestone streets become the setting for musical, dance and theatrical performances of all styles.
Our residential program in Avignon combines two advantages: a pre-college experience where our students study, live and cook with a group of peers in a vibrant town whose name has become synonymous with performing arts in France, and a language experience facilitated by the Abbey Road students and faculty.
Academics
The French language classes are taught by Abbey Road faculty; the curriculum combines classroom instruction, experiential learning and daily practice. Students study with experienced teachers and have opportunities for individual tutoring by Abbey Road staff.
Three afternoons a week students will also participate in performing arts seminars and workshops. This aspect of instruction will make the best use of the many resources of this 'City of Theater' and its exciting festival.
The Avignon program will also offer recreational, cultural and artistic activities and workshops based on student interest.
Residence Housing
Abbey Road students and staff live together in a centrally located apartment complex in Avignon. Female and male students will live in separate apartments, while the staff will live in the same complex, in apartments of their own. Students learn to share house responsibilities, shop for groceries in local markets, and prepare meals.
The residential program in Avignon encourages and facilitates the use of French through daily interaction, formal and informal courses, activities and excursions. All Abbey Road faculty and staff who live with the students are fluent in French and many are native speakers. They encourage our students to speak French at all times. However, the key to success in a language study program is the student's own motivation and effort.
Daily Schedule
During the week, students will start a typical day with the French class. After lunch, all students and staff assemble for the daily group meeting. Three afternoons a week students will participate in a variety of performing arts seminars and workshops. On other afternoons students will have a choice of social, recreational, and artistic activities which may include: excursions to local sites and museums, concerts and performances, shopping, and conversation at outdoor cafés and restaurants.
In addition to planned activities with the Abbey Road group, students will have plenty of free time to pursue personal interests, make friends and explore the town. We strive to maintain a perfect balance between structured activities and free time. While we give our students this privilege, we expect them to adhere to the program rules and safety guidelines, especially the policies on alcohol and curfew, and to uphold our standards of responsibility and maturity.
On Saturdays and Sundays, students go on day trips to some of the most beautiful sites of Provence: Aix-en-Provence, Nîmes, Pont du Gard, Marseille, and others. The program also includes a 4-day travel extension to Paris where the group stays together in a modern, 3-star hotel within walking distance to key sites and monuments.
All academics, activities, excursions and the travel extension are included in the program fee.
