Overview
Welcome to Global TEFL. We are a non-profit educational organization that has been promoting international and teacher education for the past 15 years. We are pleased to work with the School for International Training in offering the SIT TESOL Certificate Course at several sites around the United States. Why take the SIT TESOL course? It is an accredited and independently validated TESOL Certificate from the School for International Training (SIT), a recognized global leader in language education since 1964. Trainers are highly qualified TESOL professions with an MA TESOL degree and specially trained to deliver this course. The maximum class size is 12 with two full-time trainers. The course offers 130 hours of instruction, using an inductive, experiential, hands-on approach with up to 36 hours of observed practice teaching, observation and feedback. Theory comes from practice.
The Certificate Course addresses three areas:
1. Participants explore the relationship between language learning and teaching, which later provides the foundation for their investigation of teaching.
2. Participants plan, teach and assess lessons in the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), grammar, and culture, through experiential activities, teaching demonstrations, discussions, lesson planning, and readings.
3. Participants put their new knowledge and skills into practice through daily practice teaching sessions. Trainers observe and facilitate feedback sessions after these lessons. From them, participants learn to reflect on and assess their own teaching as well as to learn from the teaching of their peers.
Eligibility
1) possess a high school diploma
2) show interest in teaching ESOL at a level that a TESOL Certificate can support
3) have a positive attitude regarding experiential activities and working in groups. This means that they are not only willing to fully participate in such activities, but also recognize the value in doing so.
4) demonstrate English language proficiency (TOEFL 550 non-native speakers*)
5) complete a short essay
6) upon receipt of the written application and essay, an informal phone interview will be conducted by and SIT Trainer
Key factors for interview:
• educational background
• appropriateness of the course for the applicant’s needs/goals
• attitude regarding experiential and collaborative learning, and group work
• language proficiency
*Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English language proficiency by way of the application
process (equivalent TOEFL 550 non-native speakers*) Note: Upon acceptance, it is not guaranteed that a non-native speaker will receive a certificate. If it is judged by the trainers that the participant’s level of English is not such as to be credible to intermediate and advanced level ESL/EFL students and yet all other requirements are met, the participant may receive a Letter of Learning in lieu of the SIT TESOL Certificate.
For international students please note that Global TEFL is not authorized to issue the Form I-20.
