Overview
Florence. Located in the heart of Tuscany, this medieval city clearly stands as a cultural, historical, and academic center in Italy. With a population of roughly 380,000 people, Florence is a city vast in area but effortlessly maintains its small-town charm. In this truly efficient city, you will find that you are able to walk to any major area in roughly twenty minutes. The Vespucci airport and the Florence train station are both easily accessible and allow individuals to travel throughout Italy and Europe whenever they wish. With the rolling waters of the Arno River bisecting the city, each terracotta rooftop and cobblestone street tells a story by blending the old-city's traditional structures with modern shops, designer boutiques, and art galleries. Leather goods, olive oil, ceramics, wine, and Florentine stationery are just some of the products that Florence is famous for producing. Around every corner of this enchanting city, you will be able to discover Italian culture at its finest.
The city of Florence integrates everyday Italian traditions with a rich historical past. The citys rich history influenced this Tuscan region and has formed its distinctive personality. There is never a shortage of things to do while in Florence. The city is home to countless restaurants and bars, each serving a wide variety of Italian, and more specifically, Tuscan cuisine. If you like shopping, Florence boasts designer shops, designer outlets on the outskirts of town, an international craft fair in April and May, and the open-air markets of San Lorenzo. Additionally, there are fashion shows in the spring and fall. If you are looking for more traditional Florentine cultural activities, there is an annual music festival in May, the opera, limitless art exhibits at its many museums, outdoor cinemas in the summer months, Carnival, and the Burst of the Cart festival on Easter Sunday.
Whether you are strolling through the sculptures in Piazza Della Signoria, exploring the architectural genius of Filippo Brunelleschi's Duomo and its double shelled-walls, or enjoying a brief hike and breathtaking panoramic view from atop Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence is one of the best places to study, live, and experience the true essence of the Italian way of life.
