Overview
High school students study abroad in France with an enriching two weeks of classes at the highly acclaimed Institute of American Universities (IAU) while living in one of the only centrally located dorms in the town of Aix-en-Provence. This old capital of Provence is a buzzing network of interesting shops, cafés, and market squares. In summer the town is transformed into one of the main musical centers of Europe, playing host to the annual International Festival of Music. Birthplace of painter Paul Cézanne and inspiration for much of his work, Aix continues to be regarded as a great artistic center – a very special place in which to absorb the French culture and language.
In Aix-en-Provence, students attend French classes in the morning and participate in recreational and cultural activities such as beach trips, kayaking, hiking, concerts, museum trips and more in the afternoons. Weekend day-trips to nearby towns are included. Participants live in a university-style dorm near the school.
This program also includes one week of immersion with host families in the beautiful French Alpine town of Gap. It offers a wealth of activities in a setting of outstanding natural beauty. ECI participants are matched with carefully chosen host families who often have a son or daughter of a similar age and who are excited about sharing their homes and lives with an American teenager. Students truly experience the daily life of their host families during this special week and are generally placed one per host family in Gap.
